Eco-Schools is a recognised International award scheme, rewarding and accrediting schools who have made a commitment to continuously improving their environmental performance. It is also a learning resource, raising awareness of environmental issues through activities that link to curriculum subjects.

Pupils from Antrim Primary School get ready for their challenge
The aim of the Eco-Schools programme is to make environmental awareness and actions an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school and also the wider community, both for pupils and for staff.
 |
Translink and TIDY NI joined forces again this year to get schools involved in this Eco-schools project and in particular to look at the Transport theme.
Schools that have successfully completed all the elements of the programme are awarded the ‘Green-Flag’. This award has now become a well-recognised Eco-Label and has to be renewed every two years. |

Taking part in the challenge helps schools achieve the prestigious 'Green Flag' award. The challenge raises awareness on the impact of transport on the environment and demonstrates the benefits of using sustainable transport. Challenge resources provide schools with a range of engaging activities to complete.
Comment's From Previous Participants:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our school to work towards becoming more environmentally sustainable by reducing carbon emissions caused by car traffic and we will be using the challenge as a means to achieving our next Eco-Schools Green Flag award.
“It is also a positive step towards reducing any car congestion near our school. We were delighted to win a certificate for “Best Class” and a free trip with Translink to be taken later on this year.”
Linda McKee, Antrim Primary School
“Brownlee Primary School’s Primary 7 class thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the Eco Schools’ Travel Challenge for the second year in a row. We were delighted that one of our pupils won the award for ‘Individual pupil who travelled the most using public transport'."
C Duffy, Brownlee Primary School
“Our participation in Translink's Travel Challenge 2011 was a great experience for the children involved. Not only did they learn about sustainable methods of transport, they also got the opportunity to record and evaluate their journey to and from school.
“Translink's Travel Challenge has resulted in our children choosing a way of travelling to school which is healthier for themselves and the environment around them.”
Jolene McCormick, Eco Schools Co-Ordinator, St Aloysius Primary School, Lisburn
“The travel challenge caused much excitement in our school. The children really tried to improve their score by changing their travel habits despite our school being situated on a dangerous road which prevents and walking or cycling to school.
I felt the challenge was a great project to involve the children and their parents and many tried to change their travel habits outside school. Overall; a great success.”
Janie Hanvey, Milltown P.S
